    AUSTRALIAN TROOPS STATIONED IN SOUTH VIETNAM HAVE BEEN GIVING CHRISTMAS PARCELS TO VILLAGERS NEAR THEIR BASE CAMP AT NUI-DAT.

    THE AUSTRALIANS HAVE PULLED BACK TO THEIR BASE CAMP TO OBSERVE THE CEASE FIRE IN THE COUNTRY. THE CHRISTMAS CEASE-FIRE WAS ANNOUNCED BY GENERAL WESTMORELANO, COMMANDER OF THE UNITED STATES FORCES IN VIETNAM, AFTER DISCUSSION WITH THE VIETNAMESE LEADERS. IT WAS AGREED THAT TROOPS SHOULD KEEP TO THEIR BASE CAMPS, IN DEFENCE POSITION, FOR 24 HOURS FROM 1800 HOURS ON CHRISTMAS EVE.

    THE AUSTRALIANS TOOK A LOADED TRUCK AND LANDROVER OF GIFT PARCELS TO THE NEARBY VILLAGE OF SOUI-NGHE, AND DISTRIBUTED THE PRESENTS TO THE VILLAGERS. CALLING ON EACH FAMILY, THEY DISTRIBUTED SEVERAL HUNDRED PARCELS, WHICH INCLUDED SOAP, SWEETS, CIGARETTES AND BANANAS.

    THE AUSTRALIANS ARE MEN OF THE 104TH SIGNAL SQUADRON OF THE 1ST AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE, STATIONED AT NUI-DAT.
