  • Description

The Sudanese-Egyptian higher ministerial committee on economic integration opened in Cairo on Saturday (20 November) to review progress achieved in economic, political and military integration between the two countries.

SYNOPSIS: The committee convened in the Egyptian Family Planning Association building. It met under the joint-chairmanship of Sudanese vice-president and Prime Minister El-Rashid el-Taher and Egyptian Prime Minister Mamdouh Salem. Speeches from both men formally opened the first session.

The committee was formed two years ago, and ties between the two countries were cemented in July last year when their presidents signed a defence pact.

One of the first items on the agenda was the reclamation and cultivation of land. Delegates considered plans to reclaim and cultivate one million acres (over 405,000 hectares) of land. 30,000 acres of land -- in southern Sudan -- has already been cultivated under the programme. Prime Minister Salem said progress agriculture could only help the economies of both countries.

Prime Minister el-Rashid el-Taher said that important steps had been taken in industry as well as agriculture. He said there would also be exchanges in the fields of education, art and medicine. The committee will also study schemes for closer political and military ties during the meeting.
