Dr. Elliott Gabellah, Vice President of the African National Council, re-affirmed the Council's commitment to the principles of independence for Rhodesia on the basis of majority rule on his return to Salisbury on Saturday (22 February).
Dr. Gabellah had been in Addis Abada, Ethiopia, to attend a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Organisation of African Unity.
The Rhodesian Sunday Mail newspaper reported that Dr. Gabellah said in his statement to the OAU meeting that:
"The African stand for majority rule is clear and unequivocal. Both the British Government and the Smith regime are in no doubt that our position on this principle is not negotiable."
"We are currently involved only in the process of the mechanism of the transfer of power to the majority at the impeding constitutional conference.
"This unshakeable stance has caused Smith to resort to delaying tactics. Hence the tactical difficulties in which we are bogged down."
