Background: The U.S. Justice Department, on Friday (4 March), moved to require the Marxist DuBois Club of America to register as a Communist front organization. On Saturday (5 March), violence broke out at a Brooklyn DuBois Club chapter. It started when 150 demonstrations from the neighbourhood tried to hang an American flag across the chapter's headquarters.
The demonstrators threw eggs, garbage cans, soda bottles and fists at the outnumbered club members. A newsman was hit in the head with a can of soda. A policeman was hit with a garbage can. There were, however, no serious injuries.
The DuBois claims a national membership of 2500. It teaches Marxism, and opposes U.S. policy in Viet Nam. The Justice Department charges the club is Communist controlled, and that its main purpose is to enlist young people into the party. DuBois's national office denies the charge.
During the fighting the police arrested six club members. Four of them, police say, were caught with weapons on them.
On sunday morning (6 March) the DuBois Club's San Francisco chapter headquarters was destroyed. Police say the explosion was not caused by a gas leak. Arson is suspected. No injuries were reported.
