  • Description

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS, ASHANTIS IN WESTERN GHANA CELEBRATED THE "ADAEKESIE", ONE OF THEIR BIGGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT FESTIVALS, LAST SUNDAY.

THE FESTIVAL WAS HELD IN THE ASHANTI CAPITAL: KUMASI.

A HIGHLIGHT OF THE CELEBRATIONS WAS THE APPEARANCE OF THE WORLD-FAMOUS GOLDEN STOOL. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THE STOOL HAD BEEN SHOWN IN PUBLIC SINCE 1959. THE STOOL HAS A SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE ASHANTI PEOPLE. ANCESTOR WORSHIP PLAYS A BIG PART IN THE RELIGION OF THE PEOPLE AND THE STOOL SYMBOLIZES THE SPIRITUAL UNITY OF THE STATE -- A COMMUNION OF CHIEFS AND KINGS NOW DEAD, WITH THOSE STILL LIVING. EVERY ASHANTI CHIEF HAS A CEREMONIALLY BLACKENED STOOL SIMILAR TO THE GOLDEN STOOL ON WHICH HE IS ENTHRONED.

THE FESTIVAL WAS MARKED BY A HUGE PROCESSION THROUGH THE TOWN. THE KING OF THE ASHANTIS, KING OTUMFUO WAS CARRIED THROUGH THE STREETS ON A PALANQUIN.
