President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and Indian Prime Minister Mrs. India Gandhi discussed the international situation and the problems facing the non-aligned countries at a meeting in Calcutta on Sunday (31 March).
President Nyerere made a brief stopover in Calcutta on his way home from a visit to The People's Republic of China.
The Indian Foreign Minister, Mr. Swatan Singh, told reporters the two heads of state had reviewed ways of ??? the non aligned movement.
Mr. Singh also had talks with the Tanzanian Foreign Minister, Mr. John Malecela, who was accompanying President Nyerere.
Mr. Malecela reaffirmed Tanzanians opposition to the development of an American base on the British Indian Ocean Island of Diego Garcia. He said Tanzania felt it would cause tension and disturb peace in the area.
Mrs. Gandhi delayed her departure from Calcutta to the north-eastern state of Tripura by two hou??? to meat President Nyerere. She said India had great respect for President Nyerere as an outstanding African leader.
