  • Description

Heavy rains have caused bad floods in the western part of the United States with Kansas receiving the high water from the Arkansas River.

Thunderstorms which dropped five inches of rain and more over a six-state area have caused widespread damage in the hundreds of millions of dollars with at least 13 deaths reported.

In western Kansas, the floods are the worst since the record year of 1951.One highway after another was covered with water and on June 19th, the Kansas Highway patrol said there were no roads open into Colorado from Kansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. Many road and railroad bridges have been washed away which will leave transportation in a bad way after the flood waters recede.

Hundreds of persons in western Kansas have been evacuated from their homes as the over-flowing Arkansas River slowly crests toward Dodge City.Utility and telephone lines have been cut as debris swept by high water crashes against poles carrying the lines.

Sandbagging efforts continue at a frantic pace as many dikes break under pressure from water which is some areas reached ten feet above ground level.
