  • Description

Searching for a happy story to report from the troubled Congo, our cameraman in Leopoldville records that as in many world capitals, the citizens are preparing for a happy Christmas.

Children, coloured and white, throng the toy section of a large Leopoldville department store, gaping with wonder at the breath taking display of play things. Wishing, no doubt, that Father Christmas will fill their stockings on Christmas morning.

At the small village of Binza, some 70 kilometres from the city, Missionaries enact the arrival of 'St. Nicholas' and 'Black Peter', his negro protege, before a host of excited yet apprehensive Congolese children.

Reports on the children's behaviour during the year are related to 'Saint Nicholas' by the Missionary teacher. If they were good they get a present. But if they were naughty, not only do they not get a present, but 'Black Peter' chases them away with a frightening display of whipping the ground around their feet.
