  • Description

Represented by Gray Player - present british open Champion - and Bobby Locke, South Africa led by three strokes, June 23, at the end of the first days play in the Canada Cup Golf tournament, now being played at Portmarnock, Ireland. Player received treatment for hay fever before the start of the South African match against Mexico. Once underway he returned with a 65 - a new record for the course. Bobby Locke finished with 72 giving South Africa 137 strokes.

Three strokes behind them in second place is the American partnership of Arnold Palmer and veteran Sam Snead. Followed by a very large gallery the American players kept their strokes down to 140. Palmer returned in 69 and snead 71. Booth players showed good putting form and all their drives were steady.

A close third, the Belgian team ended the day at 141, Van Donk taking 68 for his round and his second string Devulder 73. Last year's Cup winners, Australians Peter Thompson and Kel nagle, are in 12th place with a score of 149. Thompson started well but had troubles with his putter on the way in and finished 73, with nagle taking 76.

Gary Player now leads the field in the fight for the international Trophy, awarded to the individual with the lowest outright score. Second is Van Donk followed by Palmer. With three days left for play both the Canada Cup and the International Trophy could go to anyone of ten countries. The south africans will have to play well to keep their lead in front of the Americans.
