  • Description

Twenty-one persons were killed last Thursday (13 February) when loyalist forces stormed a camp held by rebel para-military police accused of assassinating Malagasy's Head of State, Colonel Richard Ratsimandrava, last Tuesday (11 February).

General Gilles Andriamahzo, President of the military directorate that took over the country following the assassination, said in a radio broadcast that 15 rebels and six loyalist attackers were killed in the assault.

The loyalist forces launched their attack on the camp -- a police barracks just outside the capital of Tananarive -- early on Thursday. They succeeded quickly in overrunning the camp, where the rebel forces -- thought to number about 400 -- had taken refuge, but it was Friday (14 February) before the last pockets of resistance in and around Tananarive were mopped up. Colonel Brechard Rajaonarison, leader of the police mutineers -- and already accused of engineering another abortive coup last December 31 -- surrendered.

General Andriamahzo said the rebels had set free 3,200 detainees from a prison near their camp before the loyalist assault, and that the freed prisoners had looted the rebel camp and stolen arms.

Colonel Ratsimandrava had been in office for only six days when he was killed in a machine-gun attack on his car as he was driving home from a Cabinet meeting.
