  • Description

The Government of South Korea has announced plans to increase spending on defence next year by more than 25 percent to almost two thousand million dollars (about GBP 1,200 million sterling).

SYNOPSIS: The announcement was preceded by the annual parade in Seoul the capital, marking the Anniversary of the founding of the South Korean Army, 28 years ago, when the Government was formed under United Nation's control. Confetti and ticker-tape were showered on the parade.

Relations between North and South Korea have been permanently strained since the Korean war ended in stalemate in 1953, with the country still divided at the 38th parallel. South Korea still conscripts all men between the ages of 17 and 20 to take part in the so-called Civil Defence Corps.

Total strength of the Armed forces is about 625-thousand men. Also taking part in this year's Anniversary Parade were officer cadets of the Army, Air Force and Navy Academies. This year there was no sight of tanks or missiles as in previous military parades. On the day, President Park Chung He announced that South Korea could only defend itself from North Korean aggression by strengthening its armed forces. North Korea would be destroyed if it started any aggression, destroyed he said.
