  • Description

President Nasser of the United Arab Republic attended the April 30 inaugural session of the 35-nation Afro-Asian Economic Conference in Cairo, Egypt, scheduled until May 3.

Addressing the delegates, President Nasser attacked the United States for allowing the picketing of a United Arab Republic ship, the "Cleopatra", by New York dockers in protest against the Arab blockade of Israel commerce. He said that US President Eisenhower had overlooked Palestinian rights and those who had been killed or rendered homeless by Israel.

A charter, aimed at increased economic co-operation among Afro-Asian countries, was unanimously approved. It provides also that membership should be open to countries participating in the 1955 Bendung conference, and any other independent sovereign country with the seat of its central government situated in Africa or Asia. Delegates from nine Asian Soviet socialist republics - Armenia; Azerbaijan; Georgia; Kazakhstan; Kirghizia; Tadzhik; Uzebekistan; Mongolia and Turkmenistan - entitled to membership, were present at the inaugural session.

It was established that the organization should consist of a conference council and centre, to be located in Cairo for a period of four years. The official language will be English.
