Background: FERRARIS STAGED THEIR THIRD SUCCESSIVE COUP IN THE CLASSIC LE MANS 24 HOUR RACE ON JUNE 24 BY FILLING FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD POSITIONS. THE WINNING CAR, A NEW EXPERIMENTAL 4 LITRE V-12 FERRARI, WAS DRIVEN BY AMERICAN PHIL HILL AND OLIVIER GENDEBIEN OF BELGIUM - A COMBINATION WHICH HAS PROVED ALMOST INVINCIBLE IN INTERNATIONAL MOTOR RACING THIS YEAR.

COVERING 2,746 MILES IN THE 24 HOURS, THE TWO MEN SET A NEW LAP RECORD - 3 MINS. 57.6 SECS. FOR THE 8.36 MILE COURSE - SMASHING BY TWO SECONDS THE TIME SET BY THE LATE MIKE HAWTHORN IN 1957. THEY FINISHED THE RACE DRIVING SIDE BY SIDE IN THEIR RED MACHINES DOWN THE STRAIGHT THEY HAD EARLIER COVERED AT UP TO 180 M.P.H.

ONLY 19 CARS WERE LEFT ON THE TRACK WHEN THE CHEQUERED FLAG FELL AT THE FINISH, ONE THIRD OF THE NUMBER THAT ROARED OFF FROM THE START 24 HOURS EARLIER. THERE WERE A FEW MINOR ACCIDENTS BUT NOBODY WAS INJURED.

AMONG THE DISAPPOINTMENTS OF THE RACE WAS THE WITHDRAWAL SOON AFTER SUNSET OF THE BRITISH EXPERIMENTAL ASTON-MARTIN, AN EARLY LEADER, AND THE MASERATI TEAM WHICH RETIRED AT MIDNIGHT.

HILL AND GENDEBIEN WON THE RACE LAST YEAR, ALSO FOR FERRARI.
