  • Description

THE WORLD'S LEADING RACING DRIVERS ARE EARNESTLY PRACTISING FOR THE WEST GERMAN PRIX ON THE FAMOUS NUERBURGRING CIRCUIT. THE RACE TAKES PLACE ON SUNDAY BUT PRACTICE TIMES ARE ALL IMPORTANT FOR DRIVERS SEEKING THE COVETED FRONT PLACING ON THE STARTING GRID.

IN PRACTICE TODAY (FRIDAY) THE RECORD FOR THE SNAKING 22.8 KILOMETRE (14.16 MILE) CIRCUIT WAS UNOFFICIALLY BROKEN SIX TIMES. JOHN SURTEES, OF BRITAIN, DRIVING A FERRARI TWICE SMASHED THE LAP RECORD OF EIGHT MINUTES 47 SECONDS WHICH HE SET WHEN HE WON THE RACE LAST YEAR. HE CLOCKED EIGHT MINUTES 43 SECONDS THIS AFTERNOON, AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 157.1 K.P.H. (97.61 M.P.H.).

THIS YEAR'S RACE, WHICH COUNTS FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, IS MARKED BY THE GRAND PRIX DEBUT OF THE JAPANESE HONDA TEAM, WITH CALIFORNIA RONNIE BUCKNUM AT THE WHEEL. THE 12 CYLINDER CAR HAS SO FAR SUFFERED A SERIES OF SETBACKS AND HAS NOT SET UP ANY SPECTACULAR TIMES.

PHIL HILL OF THE UNITED STATES WILL BE DRIVING A BRITISH COOPER-CLIMAX. JIM CLARK, 1963 WORLD CHAMPION, WILL BE IN A LOTUS. CLARK, ALREADY LEADING THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE, IS FAVOURED TO WIN SUNDAY'S RACE.

ONE OF HIS MAIN OPPONENTS WILL BE THE ITALIAN LORENZO BANDINI WHO HAS ALREADY SET UP THE FASTEST PRACTICE TIME WITH A LAP OF EIGHT MINUTE. 42.6 SECONDS. LORENZO IS DRIVING A WORKS FERRARI.

THE FASTEST TIME SET BY THE HONDA SO FAR IS 9 MINUTES 43.3 SECONDS. THE CAR ARRIVED ON MONDAY AND ON ITS FIRST VENTURE ON THE TWISTING CIRCUIT-REPUTED TO BE THE HARDEST IN THE WORLD --PLUMMETED DOWN A DIP ON THE ROAD AND LANDED "FLAT". THE IMPACT FLATTENED THE EXHAUST PIPES AND PUSHED THE SUMP INTO ENGINE. AFTER THREE DAYS OF EXTENSIVE OVERHAUL, DURING WHICH STIFFER SPRINGS WERE FITTED AND THE CAR'S GROUND CLEARANCE RAISED SEVERAL INCHES, THE CAR BEGAN OFFICIAL PRACTICE THIS MORNING ONLY TO GO STRAIGHT INTO THE PITS AFTER ONE LAP WITH A SPLIT IN THE CASING OF THE WATER-COOLING SYSTEM. THE CAR IS ALSO A LOT OF OIL.

BUCKNUM, THE DRIVER, SAID TODAY THAT THE CAR WAS STILL ONLY FIRING ON SIX OF ITS 12 CYLINDERS AND SOME RACING EXPERTS DOUBT THAT IT WILL BE ABLE TO START ON SUNDAY.
