  • Description

Hundreds of heavily armed Israeli troops and police moved in on Jerusalem's old city last night (Wednesday) to evict Arab families from houses near the famous Wailing Wall.

The houses were part of a group which Israelis announced they would take over following bomb explosions near the wall last Friday (June 20).

It was stated that the action was a security measure as the buildings were strategically sited on the approaches to the wall.

An Israeli spokesman said Israeli troops would probably be posted inside the houses.

Paratroopers in steel helmets with rifles levelled marched into the two houses where two Arab families had held out against the eviction order and began dragging furniture and belongings into the street.

A total of 20 Arab families were ordered to leave their homes. Only the two families comprising 30 people refused.

One of the families filed out quietly when troops moved in -- the remaining family stayed put as their furniture was dragged out -- but they eventually agreed to leave the empty house.

An official Israeli statement said that new homes would be found for all the evicted Arabs and that one year's rent would be paid for them in advance.
