    Ronnie Peterson of Sweden won the Italian motor racing Grand Prix at Monza, Italy on Sunday (12 September). Shortly before the race it was announced that Peterson had been signed on by the rival Elf Tyrrell team for the 1977 season.

    SYNOPSIS: For Austrian world champion Niki Lauda (number 1) this was his come-back race with an impressive fourth place for Ferrari. Britain's James Hunt (number 11) wasn't so lucky. He was relegated to the rear because of an alleged fuel infringement. Later, he spun off the course in the 12th lap. He was unhurt. Peterson will replace south African Jody Scheckter (number 3) in the Elf Tyrrell team Scheckter took fifth place at Monza.

    Patrick Depailler (number 4) of France took sixth place in his Elf Tyrrell but much of the attention was on Hunt and the controversy over the fuel for his Mclaren. He is appealing against the relegation decision and if Hunt succeeds then Peterson could lose the win. Tyrrellssay that whatever the outcome Peterson has proved their judgement correct. Although he's only placed ninth in the Championship table, team manager Ken Tyrrell says Peterson is the natural successor to Britain's Jackie Stewart.

    Lauda expressed satisfaction with his performance. Only six weeks ago he crashed in a mass of flames in the German Grand Prix. At one stage his condition was critical but doctors say he's made a miracle recovery.

    Peterson (number 10) wasn't put off by the shadow of the dispute over Hunt. The Swedish driver said that he's looking forward to next season and the chance too drive for Elf Tyrrell. He says his new sponsors have promised him a revolutionary new version of the six wheeler for the first race of 12977 in Argentina. Meanwhile, the International Sporting Commission which polices Grand Prix racing say the appeals' procedure is underway regarding Hunt's protest.
