    The opening meeting of the 6th Session of the Near East Plant Protection Commission took place at the Professional Association Centre in Amman, Jordan on Wednesday (17 May).

    The session is being held under the Patronage of Jordanian Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Marwan Al-Hmoud. After the opening formalities had been completed, delegates moved to the Department of Agricultural Research and Extension in Amman, where they began work on the main agenda of the week-long conference.

    The main topic for the first two days of the session was the "current status and development of plant protection in the region, including special pant, pest, disease and weed control problems". Delegates from Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, North Yemen and Jordan took part in the discussions.

    The Near East Plant Protection Commission was formed in 1963 as a result of a decision made during the 12th session of the Untied Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO). It meets once every two years to discuss agricultural problems that arise in the region and to develop methods for coping with them.

    The number of participant nations is expected to the raised from the present 10 to 16 during the current session.

    SYNOPSIS: The Professional Association Centre in Amman, Jordan -- where delegates to the sixth Session of the Near East Plant Protection Commission gathered on Monday. The Commission was formed in 1963 and meets once every two years to discuss agricultural problems that arise in the region and to develop methods for coping with them. This year's session is being held under the patronage of Jordanian Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Marwan Al-Hmoud, who addressed the opening meeting.

    After the opening formalities, delegates moved to the Jordanian Department of Agricultural Research and Extension, where they were welcomed by the Chairman of the Session, Mr. Said Ghazawi. Later representatives of the ten existing member nations and others who are about to join, got down to the business of discussing the development of plant protection in the Middle East.
