Background: United Nations day, the 24th October, was celebrated in Ougadougou in the Upper Volta by a military parade on Independence Square. Interim President M. Marc Garango presided at the celebrations.
M. Garango, Minister of Finance and Trade, assumed temporary residence in the absence of President Sangoule Lamizana, who was in New York attending the special United Nations general assembly session to mark the 25th anniversary of the signing of the charter.
All the civilian and military dignitaries of the Upper Volta were with M. Garango at the celebrations in Ougadougou. The Minister of Education, in the absence of the Foreign Minister, read out a message from UN Secretary-General U Thant.
