  • Description

The vital link between Phnom Penh and the fertile rice-growing regions of the north-west of the Khmer Republic -- Highway Five -- was reopened by government troops in the Khmer Republic on Monday (25 June).

For over two weeks bloody fighting between Government and Communist forces has raged along the 181 mile (292 kms.) route. And now that the Government forces have ensured military control of the road they are setting about rebuilding the damaged roadway and bridges.

The importance of the route lies in the fact that it is the main connection between the capital Phnom Penh and the rich rice and fruit growing area of Battambang in the north-west of the country.

As fighting has continued around the capital the food shortage has become one of the vital factors of the war. High food prices and shortage of supplies inevitably weaken the morale of the people of Phnom Penh. This is why the Government forces have devoted so much energy to recapturing the vital Highway Five.

If the reconstruction work continues unhindered it is believed that the first rice convoys from Battambang will start reaching the capital within a week.
