    Delegates from seven African countries have called for more flexibility in financing anti-drought projects in the southern Sahel region of the Sahara.

    A communique issued after a two-day meeting of the permanent Committe for the Struggle against Drought in Bamako, the capital of Mali, said finance should be more readily available, given the extreme seriousness of the drought.

    The communique, signed by representatives from mali, Mauritania, Niger, Upper Volta, Senegal, Chad and Gambia, also called for a number of urgent projects to be implemented before the start of the rainy season.

    The conference, which ended on Saturday (16 March, was also attended by representatives of various United Nations relief agencies, the European Economic Community Commission, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the African-American Institute and the Organisation of African Unity.

    Algeria, East and West Germany, Belgium, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, The People's Republic of China, Sweden, Cuba and the Soviet Union also sent representatives.

    The conference was officially opened and closed by the Permanent Committee's Acting President, M. Antoine Dakoure, the Upper Volta Minister of Planning, Rural Development, the Environment and Tourism.
