Background: More than 200 cyclists and pedestrians took part in a demonstration in Rome on Saturday (2 December) protesting pollution caused by motor traffic.

The protestors disrupted traffic in the main streets of the city as they rode from the Piazza del Popolo, on the north side of the city, to the Colosseum, on the south side.

They shouted slogans and threw out leaflets claiming that the traffic problem was due to a mistaken idea of progress.

Rome has one of the world's worst traffic problems in its narrow, winding streets and the vibrations are said to be affecting a number of ancient monuments.

The demonstration, organised by the World Wildlife Fund and an Italian ecological group, follows a recently announced plan to divide the historic centre of Rome into sections and gradually close them off to traffic.
