  • Description

Egyptian and United States ministers yesterday (Thursday) held their first high-level meeting since the death of President Nasser. Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad and U.S. Secretary of State William Rogers met in New York in an effort to hammer out a new agreement extending the 90-day Middle-East ceasefire.

The two leaders spent about two hours discussing the Middle East situation. But when interviewed afterwards, Mr Riad indicated that the only real area of agreement between the two sides had been to hold further discussions :
American leaders are anxious to prolong the ceasefire beyond its present November 5 deadline. Mr Rogers is due to have talks with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko today (Friday) to sound out latest Kremlin thinking on the Middle East.
