  • Description

A party of about 100 Tibetans were filmed by Visnews March 28 as they arrived in Delhi from the Indian border town of Kalimpong to appeal to Premier Nehru for assistance and intervention on behalf of their country.

They are part of a large number of refugees who fled from Tibet when the Chinese first moved into the country in 1950. Among them is former Prime Minister Lukhangwa, and their mission was prompted by Peking's announcement that Communist China has dissolved the Tibetan Local Government and dethroned their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. His place has been taken by his spiritual and temporal subordinate, the Panchen Lama, who has been under Communist influence and training as an alternative puppet "Living Buddha" since 1956.

The Dalai Lama who has escaped from Lhasa is now reported to be suffering from injuries sustained in a fall during his retreat into the mountains. His exact whereabouts are unknown. Reports reaching Kalimpong earlier said thousands of Chinese soldiers - there are 300,000 Communist troops in Tibet - had fanned out to the south-west and east from Lhasa in an attempt to capture the Dalai Lama.

Peking admitted March 28 that there has been a serious rebellion in Tibet, announcing it had been crushed in Lhasa but opposition persisted in other areas.

Martial law has been imposed and the capital is swarming with 50,000 Chinese troops. Reports put the number of Tibetans killed in Lhasa at 5,000. About 13,000 monks are said to have been taken prisoner.

China openly hinted March 29 at Indian complicity in the Tibetan revolt and said Kalimpong was its "commanding centre". The Indian Foreign Ministry emphatically repudiated this suggestion.
