CYPRUS -- AND BRIGHTER NEWS TONIGHT (FRIDAY). THE THREAT OF A TURKISH LANDING IN CYPRUS?

  • Description

CYPRUS -- AND BRIGHTER NEWS TONIGHT (FRIDAY). THE THREAT OF A TURKISH LANDING IN CYPRUS NOW SEEMS LESS LIKELY. THIS EMERGED AFTER A GOVERNMENT STATEMENT IN ANKARA WELCOMING UNITED NATIONS MOVES TO SEND A PEACE FORCE TO THE ISLAND.

BUT THE TURKISH MILITARY FORCES ARE BELIEVED TO BE STILL IN A STATE OF READINESS IN CASE THE SITUATION SHOULD ONCE AGAIN DETERIORATE. ALL WEEK UNITS OF THE TURKISH ARMY HAVE BEEN IN TRAINING.

TODAY (FRIDAY) MEN OF THE 39TH DIVISION WERE REPORTED TO HAVE EMBARKED IN 21 VESSELS OF THE TURKISH FLEET BASED IN ISKENDERUN, POISED FOR A LANDING IN CYPRUS.

TURKEY'S ARMY HAS A FORMIDABLE STRENGTH AND IS SAID TO BE FAR MORE POWERFUL THAN GREECE'S. BOTH COUNTRIES ARE MEMBERS OF THE 15-NATION NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION (NATO).

THE TURKISH NAVY -- LIBRARY FILM SHOWS UNITS AT SEA EARLIER THIS MONTH -- LIKEWISE REPRESENTS A FORMIDABLE FORCE. ITS DESTROYERS INCLUDE SOME -- LIKE THE "KILIC ALY PASA" -- BOUGHT FROM THE BRITISH NAVY. OTHER VESSELS, INCLUDING THE SUBMARINE "HIZAR REIS," WERE FORMERLY PART OF THE U.S. NAVY.

TODAY'S NEWS FROM ISKENDERUN IS THAT A TASK FORCE OF 25 TURKISH WARSHIPS HAD RETURNED FROM EXERCISES TO BE LOADED WITH GUNS, SMALL TANKS AND OTHER WEAPONS, AS WELL AS TO TAKE MEN OF THE 39TH DIVISION.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, ALL NAVAL LEAVE WAS REPORTED CANCELLED IN SOUTHERN TURKISH PORTS, ALL OF WHICH ARE WITHIN A DAY'S SAILING OF NORTHERN CYPRUS. "EXTRAORDINARY ACTIVITY" WAS MENTIONED AS WARSHIPS "EXERCISED" ONLY 100 MILES (160 KMS) FROM THE NORTH-EAST COAST OF CYPRUS.
