Background: Hundreds of Djakarta students stage a peaceful anti-corruption rally in the Indonesian capital on Tuesday ( 11 August ). The students waved placards and plastered posters on cars and buildings during the demonstration organised by the High School students' Action Front.

The demonstrators marched to the office of the Indonesia Attorney General Sugih Arto, and demanded to see him. The students were told the Attorney General was too busy to meet them and several students were held by guards for questioning and later released. Placards carried by students carried slogans including "corruption is raging" and "Will the anti-corruption spirit be buried here?".

The anti-corruption campaign has already yielded results with President Suharto taking many of the measured demanded by the students. These include a statement of the authority of his personal assistant, registration of the property of Government and Military officials, and the appointment of a ministerial committee to draft a constitution for the giant State-owned oil company Pertamina.
