  • Description

Communications were resumed between Jordan and Iraq Oct 20 after being suspended for 2 years following the Iraq revolution of 1958 in which King Faisal - King Hussein's cousin - was murdered, and General Kassem came to power. Road and air traffic, and radio and tele-communications began again following a formal inaugural 'phone call between the two capitals.

A Jordanian spokesman said it was a step towards the resumption of diplomatic relations, following Jordan's recent recognition of the present Iraqi regime. Another spokesman said the open border would mean work for 6,000 Jordanian lorries which would take fruit and vegetables to Iraq, and Iraq products to Jordan.

The new link-up follows attacks by Egypt's Nasser against both Hussein and Kassem.
