The Khmer Republic Prime Minister, Mr. Long Boret, has announced the formation of a new 15 member war cabinet replacing his coalition Government which resigned last Thursday. He held his first meeting with the members on Tuesday (18 June) in the National Assembly building in Phnom Penh.
The new cabinet contains seven members of Mr. Boret's Socio-Republican Party, which supports President Lon Nol, six independents and two army men. It excludes the Republicans, the junior partner in the last Government.
Negotiations over the formation of a new coalition became deadlocked over the weekend after a disagreement between the Socio-Republicans and the Republicans. Mr. Boret's five-and-a-half month old coalition fell after several weeks of internal wrangling.
The formation of the new Government was delayed while the country mourned the deaths of the Education Minister, Mr. Sangkim and his aide killed in a violent student protest.
