  • Description

AUSTRALIAN TROOPS FIGHTING IN GUERILLA WARFARE IN BORNEO ARE TO USE LABRADOR DOGS TO HELP THEM TRACK DOWN THEIR QUARRIES. THE DOGS ARE BEING TRAINED AT THE MOMENT IN SOUTHERN MALAYA - WHERE CONDITIONS ARE VERY SIMILAR TO THOSE EXPERIENCED BY THE SOLDIERS IN BORNEO.

GETTING THE DOGS TO THE SCENE OF THE OPERATION QUICKLY IS ALL-IMPORTANT AND THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED BY THE AUSTRALIANS WHO ARE FLYING THEM AND THEIR HANDLERS IN BY HELICOPTER. DURING THIS EXERCISE THE DOGS WERE ATTACHED TO THE FOURTH BATTALION OF THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN REGIMENT HELPED BY ABOUT 70 BRITISH COMMANDOS.

THE HELICOPTER HOVERED ABOUT 100 FEET (29 METRES) ABOVE THE JUNGLE AND THE DOG HANDLERS WERE LOWERED TO THE GROUND. THEN THE DOGS WERE LOWERED AFTER THEM - AND DIDN'T SEEM TO MIND THE EXPERIENCE AT ALL.

ONCE ON THE GROUND THE DOGS FOLLOW THE SCENT OF THE "ENEMY" AND LEAD THE SOLDIERS OFF THROUGH THE THICK UNDERGROWTH.
