Pope John Paul the Second ???onsecrated a new Archbishop on Saturday (15 September). He's ??? Tomco from Czechoslovakia. In July, he was named by the Pope as General Secretary of the World Synod of Bishops, after having been nominated Vice-Rector of one of the Papal Colleges in Rome.
SYNOPSIS: The consecration in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican was made less than two weeks before the Pontiff begins his visit to the Irish Republic and the United States.
On the same day as the consecration, Czech dissidents reported that three more Roman Catholics had been arrested in Czechoslovakia. They claimed this brought to nine including five priests the number known to have been searched and arrested for printing and circulating religious literature.
Archbishop Tomko was born in 1924 in the Slovakian part of Czechoslovakia.
Before his elevation to the post of Archbishop, Monsignor Tomko worked in the congregation of the Doctrine of Faith and in the Congregation of Bishops in Rome.
Twenty-one Cardinals and sixty Bishops were present for the solemn ceremony.
The new Archbishop was ordained to the priesthood in 1949. Now at the age of fifty-five he has been made Archbishop of Doclea.
