The watching crowd included the country's military governors, top army officers, traditional chiefs, members of Diplomatic Corps and top civil servants. The ceremony began with the Academy band playing the national anthem, during which General Gowon took the salute. He later inspected a guard of honour mounted by the officer cadets of the Academy.
The Colours -- the National and Academy flags -- were laid on drums where they were blessed during a religious service. After the blessing, the Colours were presented to two officers of the Academy.
During an address to the cadets, General Gowon said they should serve Nigeria and its Government in accordance with their duty and oath of allegiance. They should not misuse the trust and confidence of the country, he added. In doing their duty, the cadets would keep the honour and good name of the Academy. The Nigerian Armed Forces were respected and known the world over for their sterling qualities and loyalty, said the General, and he charged the cadets to be prepared to keep the flag flying. general Gowon said that during the civil war, he had received good reports of the conduct of officers who had passed out of the academy.
