Background: President and Mrs. Lyndon Johnson played host to 29 ambassadors and their wives from 20 Latin American nations over the weekend (1 and 2 April) at the L-B-J Ranch near Johnson City, Texas.

The diplomats ate more than one thousand pounds of barbecued beef and chicken and about as many biscuits, at a Saturday (1 April) feast in a grove of oak trees along the Pedernales River.

With the large helpings of beef and chicken, the President served his guests ideas for the forthcoming Organization of American States " Latin Summit Meeting " at Punta del Este, Uruguay. Local and state officials did not lose any opportunities to promote a 156-million dollar affair called HemisFair that will be held in San Antonio, Texas next year to the assembled diplomats. Many Latin nations are expected to participate in the Hemisphere " World's Fair"
There were 29 ambassadors present for the weekend festivities, 9 more than there are countries in Latin America. The surplus is explained by the fact that some Latins American nations send one ambassador to the United States in Washington and another to the O.A.S. Council, also in Washington. All were invited.

The tone of the weekend was informal. The President's daughter, Mrs. Patrick Nugent, who is expecting her first child in June, was there to help her parents greet the diplomats. She wore a orange, green and white-striped tent-type dress.
