  • Description

An Egyptian delegation, headed by Economy Ministry Under-Secretary Mohamed Zulficar, opened talks on Thursday (27 April) at the European Economic community (EEC) commission headquarters in Brussels. The talks will centre on a preferential trade agreement between the EEC and Egypt.

The Common Market has arrangement for special trade with all Mediterranean countries apart from Albania, Algeria, Libya and Syria. During this year each of these arrangements will have to be adapted to apply to the four possible new members of the Common Market - Britain, Ireland, Norway and Denmark.

There is a growing feeling among Community officials that the Common Market must begin to define a coherent policy for the Mediterranean area. Europe relies heavily on the Arab countries for about 75 per cent of its oil needs, and there are about three million emigrant workers from the Mediterranean countries in the Common Market.

For the most part, the trade arrangements between the Community and the Mediterranean include limited and mutual tariff cuts in the industrial field, and some tariff advantages for the Mediterranean countries on certain agricultural products.
