Background: World Boxing Association World featherweight champion Alexis Arguello of Nicaragua knocked out Japanese challenger, Royal Kobayashi, in the fifth round of a championship title bout in Tokyo on Sunday (12 October). A crowd of 16,000 packed the stadium to see the fight.
Using fast footwork and faster left jabs, the 23-year old champion kept Kobayashi, 25, from closing in, and then used left and right combinations to the body to take the first four rounds.
Without being able to close in, the challenger, who had a shorter reach, was almost helpless against Arguello's attack.
In a desperate attempt to land some damaging punches, Kobayashi rushed the champion at the start of the fifth round, but ran into a sharp right to the jaw from Arguello and went down for a mandatory count of eight.
Arguello then closed in for the kill, caught Kobayashi against the ropes and knocked him down again with a left and right. Flat on his back, Kobayashi tried to rise but was counted out by Filipino referee Carlo Padilla.
The fight was Arguello's third successful defence of his title which he won from Mexico's Rueben Olivares last year. He now has 41 wins -- including 37 knockouts to his credit, with only three defeats in 44 fights. For Kobayashi Sunday's fight was his first defeat. So far he's won 18 fights which included 17 knockouts.
