    A 25 acre (10 hectare) section of central Rome was sealed off to almost all traffic from Saturday (July 28) in an attempt to deal drastically with Rome's traffic chaos - and protect historic buildings from the vibration.

    In the new "no-go" area are such historic sites and tourist attractions as the Trevi Fountain, the Quirinale Presidential Palace and the Church of the Holy Apostles.

    The new pedestrian precinct, protected by barriers to keep away the motorists ins the firs to seven which will eventually cover the whole of central Rome.

    SYNOPSIS: In Rome - the boldest attempt to deal with the city's terrible traffic problems. From Saturday, twenty five acres of central Rome were sealed off to almost all traffic. Police were out to enforce the new "no go" area for traffic.

    It is the latest move by the City Council to try to deal with the traffic jams choking the city, and save its historic buildings from vibration damage.

    The pedestrian precinct is the first of seven to be set up. They will eventually cover the whole of central Rome. Only emergency vehicles, taxies and buses and residents cars will be allowed in.

    The barriers of the first "no go" zone will protect such famous tourist attractions as the Quirinale Presidential Palace, the Church of the Holy Apostles and the Trevi Fountain.
