  • Description

TURKEY GOES TO THE POLLS ON SUNDAY. SIX PARTIES ARE CONTESTING THE GENERAL ELECTION AND THIS YEAR, FOR THE FIRST TIME, AN OPENLY LEFT-WING PARTY THE LABOUR PARTY - IS IN THE POLITICAL ARENA.

YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) THE JUSTICE PARTY HELD A RALLY IN ISTANBUL'S MAIN SQUARE, THE TAKSIM SQUARE. FOR THE LAST FEW MONTHS THE COUNTRY HAS BEEN RUN BY A COALITION IN WHICH THE JUSTICE PARTY IS THE MAIN PARTY - THE OTHERS ARE THE NEW TURKEY PARTY, THE NATIONAL PARTY, AND THE REPUBLICAN PEASANTS NATIONAL PARTY. SOME BELIEVE THAT THE JUSTICE PARTY CAN WIN AN OVERALL MAJORITY ON SUNDAY, BUT THE RESULTS ARE DIFFICULT TO FORSEE, PARTICULARLY WITH THE ENTRY OF THE LABOUR PARTY INTO THE ELECTION.

THE SYMBOL OF THE JUSTICE PARTY IS A WHITE HORSE AND THREE WHITE HORSES WERE IN THE SQUARE YESTERDAY TO ADD COLOUR TO THE PARTY WHERE THE MINISTER OF HEALTH, DR FARUK SUKAN, AND PARTY LEADER MR SJLEYMAN DEMIREL WERE AMONG THE MAIN SPEAKERS.

TWO FAMOUS NAME IN TURKEY ARE STANDING ON BEHALF OF THE JUSTICE PARTY, ONE IS MR MENDERES, THE SON OF THE FORMER TURKISH MINISTER WHO WAS EXECUTED FOLLOWING THE 1960 COUP; AND THE OTHER IS MISS BAYAR, THE DAUGHTER OF PRESIDENT BAYAR WHO WAS ALSO OVERTHROWN BY THE COUP.

THE JUSTICE PARTY'S CHIEF OPPOSITION WILL COME FROM MR INUNO'S REPUBLICAN PEOPLE PARTY. THE 82 YEAR OLD LEADER FIRST BECAME PRIME MINISTER OF TURKEY UNDER ATATURK IN 1923 AND RESIGNED AGAIN AS PRIME MINISTER EARLIER THIS YEAR. SOME BELIEVE THAT HIS RESIGNATION WAS TO ALLOW TIME FOR THE FOUR PARTY COALITION TO EARN SOME ELECTORAL UNPOPULARITY BEFORE THE ELECTIONS.
