  • Description

Returning from his quest for the "Yeti" - the "Abominable Snowman" - renowned mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary, and members of his Himalayan expedition, were seen on the roadside at Banepa, Nepal, Dec 5, on the last stage of their journey to Katmandu.

Accompanying Sir Edmund was Khunjo Chumbi, a village elder from Khumjung, who was entrusted with the task of guarding the controversial "Yeti" scalp taken by Hillary from nearby Thangboche Monastery on the slopes of Everest. It is thought that the scalp will help to solve the ridole of the legendary "Abonimable Snowman".

On arrival in Katmandu, Sir Edmund displayed the scalp to Field Marshal Keisar Bahadur and Nepalese Government officials. Later, he was to be received at the royal palace by King Mahendra.

The scalp was first to be taken to Chicago, U.S.A. for examination by leading anthropologists. After about seven days it was to be returned to Britain for further study. It had to be returned to Khamjung by January. Sir Edmund was expected to fly from Calcutta Dec. 17.
