Background: America's rural sights and sounds were in evidence this week in the heart of New York City. The annual Winter Country Fair was the occasion as the New York Coliseum echoed with the sounds of country and western music and the bleating of hundreds of animals.
New Yorkers, many of whom only see grass at week-ends or fleetingly during the summer, seemed to receive the rural display with pleasure.
A wide variety of farm animals including pigs, goats and sheep filled pens in the massive building as people moved among them. The animals seemed to find their surroundings as interesting to them as they were to the many people who visited the fair.
Dancers performed traditional square dances during the fair.
Although the music and dancing was imported from the country to the city for the fair, the performers were all from the New York area. This did not seem to lessen anyone's enjoyment of it all, however.
