Background: BACKGROUND MATERIAL: In Karachi, President Mohammed Ayub Khan formally inaugurated a Rs. 10 crore giant Oil Refinery. This is the second Oil Refinery with a capacity of half a million tons which would mainly produce oil, base for lubricants, asphalt and bituman. While inaugurating the Oil Refinery, the President said that the Government was intensifying its efforts to unearth new oil reserves in the country to attain self sufficiency in this field. The work on prospecting for oil continued unabated both in private and public sectors and the Government was lending a helping hand by sharing in the cost of the search for oil by private companies while the Oil and Gas Development Corporation st up in 1961 was making energetic efforts with the assistance of foreign experts and technicians to discover new reserves.
