President Hamani Diori of Niger yesterday (Monday) started a five-day official visit to Morocco. He was met at the new Rabat-Sale Airport by King Hassan II.
A 20-gun salute rang out as the aircraft carrying President Diori, his wife and a ministering delegation touched down. The visitors left the aircraft to meet King Hassan and the two groups stood to attention as a military band played the national anthems of Niger and Morocco. Then the visitor watched a march-past and inspected a guard of honour mounted by King Hassan's Royal Guard. Before leaving the tarmac for the VIP lounge in the terminal building President Diori was introduced to members of the diplomatic corps.
After a brief meeting at the airport, the President and King Hassan drove in a motorcade into the capital, through street lined by crowds estimated at 100,000. President Diori's official programme started a few hours after he arrived with an audience with the King at his palace.
During his stay the Niger leader will visit Fez, Beni Mellal and Marrakesh. A Niger delegation made up of the Commissioner for Development, M. Goukoye Karimo and the Director for Economic Affairs, M. Jean Poisson, had been in Rabat for ten days before President Diori arrived. Officials said that a commercial treaty between Morocco and Niger would be signed during the official visit.
