  • Description

CHALLENGER SONNY LISTON HAD A 25-POUND ADVANTAGE WHEN HE ENTERED THE RING FOR HIS HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT AT CHICAGO, SEPTEMBER 25. LISTON WEIGHTED IN AT 214... DEFENDING CHAMPION FLOYD PATTERSON SCALED 189 POUNDS.

DESPITE THE WEIGHT DISADVANTAGE, PATTERSON'S HANDLERS WERE SATISFIED WITH HIS WEIGHT. HE WAS ONLY ONE POUND BELOW THE 190 POUNDS WHICH HE SCALED IN HIS BEST PERFORMANCE AS CHAMPION. PATTERSON WEIGHED AN EVEN 190 ON JUNE 20, 1960, WHEN HE BECAME THE FIRST MAN IN RING HISTORY TO RECAPTURE THE HEAVYWEIGHT CROWN ON A KNOCKOUT OVER INGEMAR JOHANSSON.

LISTON'S HANDLERS ALSO WERE HAPPY. SAID LISTON "I ALWAYS FIGURE MY BEST FIGHTING WEIGHT IS ABOUT 212, BUT I GAVE IT TWO MORE POUNDS THIS TIME TO HAVE SOMETHING TO WEAR OFF."
LISTON, WEARING WHITE TRUNKS AND STANDING BAREFOOT FOR THE WEIGHTING, LOOKED DOWN ON THE SMALLER PATTERSON AND SAID OMINOUSLY, "I'LL SEE YOU TONIGHT." PATTERSON DIDN'T HEAR, OR IGNORED THE REMARK, BUT HIS TRAINER, DAN FLORIO, SNAPPED - "NO, WE'LL SEE YOU TONIGHT." AFTER THE WEIGH-IN, PATTERSON ANSWERED SEVERAL QUESTIONS OVER A LOUD SPEAKER. WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE LISTON WEIGHT ADVANTAGE, PATTERSON REPLIED... "PROBABLY I COULD BE STRONGER AND I COULD BE FASTER. I HAVE FOUGHT BIGGER MEN BEFORE AND I DON'T THINK IT MAKES ANY DIFFERENCE."
THE WEIGH-IN WAS STAGED IN THE SHERATON-CHICAGO HOTEL BEFORE 500 NEWSMEN AND PHOTOGRAPHERS UNDER SUPERVISION OF THE ILLINOIS ATHLETIC COMMISSION.
