  • Description

The Kenyan Minister of Education's Curriculum Development Centre is under way and operating successfully in Nairobi. The Centre was formed primarily to train teachers in the use of low-cost educational aids.

The overall purpose of the Centre is to keep teachers up-to-date with latest methods, particularly in fields in which they may not be fully experienced.

The Centre was formed from the amalgamation of the English Special Centre, the Nairobi Science Teaching Centre and the Mathematics Centre, all of them formerly under Ministry of Education control.

The Science Section organises three-week courses for graduate and non-graduate teachers working in newly opened schools.

Several hours a day are spent in actual instruction, but two hours are set aside for workshop training, where the teachers learn to make their own equipment.

Teachers recently, for example, have been shown how to make a simple microscope for about 6d. Despite its cost, it is efficient enough to show pupils what a microscope is and how it works.

Each school child is allowed 17 shillings per year to cover the cost of books, paper, writing instruments and other equipment. The teacher is shown how best to keep within this limit.
