  • Description

Car workers in the Argentine industrial city of Cordoba, joined the growing band of demonstrators on Tuesday (10 June) to protest at the rising cost of living.

More than 2,500 workers marched through the city to the Government House to air their grievances. They wanted an emergency bonus of 2,000 pesos (about 28 pounds sterling) and the Government to lift the present limits on general wage increases to offset the cost of living. The marchers were intercepted by the police - and they dispersed without any incident.

Meanwhile, the police discovered food and small tools hidden in drain pipes. They were found when police opened a drainage system in their search for hidden arms and illegal left-wing groups.

Police believed that the food and tools were planned for the use of urban rebels in any escape from jails in the city.
