  • Description

Khmer government forces failed to reopen Highway 5 on Saturday (15 December), despite support from a squadron of Armoured Personnel Carriers and two reconnaissance companies from the elite Seventh Division.

Shortly before midday, one company moved to the southern side of the road to try and flush Khmer Rouge insurgents from a bunker complex located near a small hamlet called Peam Pisei. Minutes after the government forces had taken their positions, the fighting became intense.

During the attack Khmer soldiers set fire to several huts as they advanced through the hamlet. At the end of the encounter ten insurgents lay dead, and the government troops had captured some weapons. One Khmer soldier was killed in a burst of automatic fire, and Khmer officers found the bodies of three civilians nearby -- they had been bound, gagged and then shot.

In the costly gun battle, the government forces had only advance some five hundred yards (550 metres). Khmer officers felt that the Khmer Rouge, about one hundred men strong, had fallen back to regroup. The communists still hold the highway linking Phnom Penh with the rice-growing province of Battambang.
