  • Description

The World Boxing Association junior lightweight champion, Ben Villaflor of the Philippines, narrowly managed to retain his title against his Japanese challenger, Apollo Yoshio, at Toyama in Japan on Thursday (14 March).

In an uneventful fight with no knockdowns, Villaflor managed to get a clear points victory over Yoshio from only one judge. The second judge gave the fight to the Japanese and the referees scored the bout even.

The draw enabled Villaflor, under Boxing Association regulations, to retain his title.

It was Villaflor's first defence of the title since he regained it from Japan's Kuniaki Shibata, who now holds the World Boxing Council version of the same title.
