Polish President, Marian Spychalski, arrived by air at Islamabad airport on Thursday (29 October) to begin his first visit to Pakistan as Head of State. Three days later (Sunday 1st November), as the official party was preparing to leave Karachi, an airport truck careered into a group of officials, killing four and seriously injuring eight. President Spychalski had a narrow escape from injury, but the dead included his Deputy Foreign Minister, Zugfryd Wolniak. The truck driver is reported to have deliberately steered into the group as an anti-communist protest.
President Spychalski was welcomed at Islamabad airport by President Yahya Khan of Pakistan, cabinet ministers, service chiefs, and the heads of diplomatic missions. President and Madam Spychalski received bouquets of flowers.
The President's arrival was heralded by a 21-gun salute, and after both countries' national anthems had been played, the guard on honour....made up of army and airport contingents....was inspected.
President Spychalski and his 24-member Party were beginning a five-day visit to Pakistan for economic and trade talks, and to discuss international problems. Poland had agreed to provide assistance to Pakistan's ship-building industry. This is in addition to the current 14 million dollars Polish credit... of which nearly 12 million dollars has already been committed to six large industrial projects.
