    The ashes of 71 people killed in student riots which toppled the former Thai military government a year ago were scattered over the mouth of Thailand's Chao Pya River on Tuesday (15 October).

    The ritual ended three days of national mourning during which the bodies of the 71 killed last year were cremated in a mass ceremony attended by Thailand's King and Queen.

    A large crowd was present at Sanam Luang market place in Bangkok when student representatives and government officials released the ashed.

    A Thai Army helicopter carried part of the ashes to the mouth of the Chao Pya River where it was scattered in accordance with the Thai tradition of saturating peace for the souls of the dead.

    The rest of the ashes will go to relatives and the National Students Centre of Thailand (NSCT) for internment into a monument commemorating the warishing which, ousted the military government of Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn.
