  • Description

Princess Margaret - sister of Queen Elizabeth of Britain - flew to the Seychelles Islands to join in the celebrations on Sunday (1 October) of the 200th anniversary of the landing of settlers.

For most of the 200 years life has gone on quietly and undisturbed in the remote Indian Ocean Islands. In march this year, an international airport was opened there and the islands are rapidly becoming a popular holding choice. But the islanders do not want their idyllic existence spoilt by the commercialisation which has ravaged other places of sun and natural beauty.

Prime Minister James Mancham and his government are determined to retain the "unspoilt" atmosphere.

In her arrival address, Princess Margaret said the beauty of the Seychelles and the character of the people, preserved by years of virtual isolation, remained the islands' greatest assets.

The Princess, who is accompanied by her husband, Lord Snowdon, will stay in the Seychelles until Saturday (7 October), when they will fly to Singapore for a one-night stopover before a ten-day tour of parts of Australia.
