Background: THE GRAND PRIX DE NATIONS MOTORCYCLE ROAD RACING AT MONZA, ITALY, SEPT. 3, ATTRACTED LARGE CROWDS AND AN UNUSUALLY HIGH NUMBER OF COMPETITIVE MANUFACTURING FIRMS.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY'S RACING WERE THE 350 AND 500 c.c. EVENTS. EXPERTS PREDICTED A THRILLING DUEL IN BOTH EVENTS BETWEEN GARY HOCKING OF RHODESIA AND MIKE HAILWOOD OF GREAT BRITAIN, AND THEIR PREDICTIONS PROVED CORRECT.

HAILWOOD AND HOCKING, BOTH RIDING PRIVATELY ENTERED M.V. MACHINES, ROARED AWAY FROM THE FIELD AT THE START OF THE 350 c.c. EVENT. SOON THEY WERE DUELLING AROUND THE MANY BENDS OF THIS FAMOUS TRACK. HOWEVER, HOCKING MANAGED TO GET IN FRONT AND HOLD HIS LEAD PAST THE CHEQUERED FLAG TO WIN IN 51 MINUTES 17.8 SECONDS AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 181.590 KM.P.H. THIS IS A NEW RECORD TIME FOR THE MONZA TRACK, AND ONLY 5.3 SECONDS FASTER THAN HAILWOOD. HAVEL OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA WAS THIRD ON A JAWA MACHINE.

REVENGE CAME TO HAILWOOD IN THE 500 c.c. EVENT, BUT ONLY AFTER MISFORTUNE HAD OVERTAKEN HOCKING, WHO HAD TO RETIRE THREE LAPS FROM THE END OF THE RACE. HAILWOOD COVERED THE 35 LAPS IN 1 HOUR 4 MINUTES 24 SECONDS, AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 201.250 KM.P.H. SECOND AND THIRD PLACES WERE FILLED BY BRITONS KING AND DRIVER, BOTH RIDING NORTON MACHINES.
