  • Description

Two opportunist goals by George Armstrong gave Arsenal a convincing victory over North London rivals Tottenham today (Saturday) -- and kept them among the leading soccer clubs in the English First Division.

The non-stop running of Armstrong, a former England Under-23 international, gave Arsenal and exhilarating start as the little winger snapped up two goals in the first 23 minutes.

The first came on the quarter-hour. Radford, on the right wing, drew Spurs goalkeeper Hancock out to the edge of the penalty area, before slipping the ball past him. Armstrong held off Spurs back Kinnear and crashed the ball into an empty net.

Six minutes later, hancock failed to hold a centre from Kelly, and Armstrong whipped in a shot for his second goal.

Though fielding one of the most expensive teams in English soccer, Spurs never looked like coming back into the game. And though Arsenal created a number of second-half chances, they failed to go further ahead.
