    IN SAIGON, AN AMERICAN SPOKESMAN SAID MORE THAN 100 MEMBERS OF THE VIETCONG WERE KILLED IN WEDNESDAY'S ATTACK ON THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE RANGER CAMP AT DUC LAP, NOT FAR FROM SAIGON.

    TWO BATTALIONS - AROUND 800 MEN - WERE REPORTED TO HAVE TAKEN PART. SOUTH VIETNAMESE RANGERS AT THE CAMP REPULSED THE ATTACK SHOWERING THE VIETCONG WITH BOMBS, ARTILLERY SHELLS AND MACHINE-GUN FIRE.

    THE BATTERED CAMP SHOWED HOW FIERCE THE ASSAULT HAD BEEN - THE CAMP LAY IN RUINS, A BATTLEGROUND IN A PATCH OF SMOULDERING JUNGLE. VIETCONG BODIES LAY STREWN ABOUT AMID CAPTURED ARMS AND AMMUNITION.

    (THE US SPECIAL FORCES CAMP AT PLEI ME, FARED WORSE THE NINE-DAY BATTLE, THE LONGEST OF THE VIETNAM WAR, HAS JUST ENDED WITH A TOLL ON BOTH SIDES RECKONED IN HUNDREDS. REPORTERS ARE NOT YET COMPLETE ON HOW MANY DEFENDERS SURVIVED IN ORDER TO HOLD THE CAMP AGAINST SOME OF NORTH VIETNAM'S CRACK TROOPS).
